This presentation will review the role of obstetrical ultrasound in maternal and fetal evaluation during the first trimester of pregnancy. Maternal and early fetal anatomical structures will be covered, as well as the importance of sonographic landmarks to estimate gestational age and viability. The use of M-mode for obtaining fetal heart rate will be discussed. Anatomic concerns will be identified, such as the role of the ovarian corpus luteum in supporting the earliest stages of pregnancy, and the normal and abnormal anatomy that may be encountered during a first trimester obstetrical ultrasound.
