This presentation begins with the pioneers of the cyclotron and moves through the schematics of a modern proton therapy center. The layout of the cyclotron, electromagnets within the accelerator structure, and treatment room gantries are covered. Active scanning and passive scatter proton therapy modalities are introduced, and their beam characteristics are described with implications for treatment outcomes. Photon beam treatment modalities are presented, including IMRT, VMAT, and Tomotherapy along with current studies comparing outcomes to each treatment modality. Proton and photon beam treatment plans for various clinical cases are illustrated with planning dose distribution images, including lung, prostate, cranial, spinal, and others. The mechanisms of proton therapy are summarized, and its benefits reviewed.
