Image contrast is a critical consideration in MRI, because the differentiation of normal and abnormal tissue depends on how anatomy is presented. In MRI, when we select image contrast, we are determining how tissues will be represented as shades of gray. This is dependent on the behavior of tissues in our patient, and we want to visualize or remove longitudinal or transverse magnetism. The more signal that is collected, the brighter the structure in the image, and we control this process with different types of contrast, including T1 weighting, T2 weighting, T2* weighting, PD weighting, and diffusion.
