Although most research on bone mineral density has focused on postmenopausal women, bone densitometry is an increasingly useful tool to assess at-risk pediatric patients. This targeted article discusses pediatric skeletal development, bone disease and factors that interfere with normal bone growth. In addition to describing the available options for bone density assessment in children and adolescents, the text explains when bone density should be measured and the most appropriate method of measurement.
