Advanced medical imaging modalities, particularly fluoroscopy, interventional radiology and computed tomography, are associated with long exposure times and high radiation doses, making radiation protection a vital concern. In the United States, increased utilization of radiologic examinations has added to the effective dose to patients. Recent news articles concerning radiation overexposure have heightened public awareness of this problem and have prompted those directly involved in patient care to be more conscious of radiation safety.
Radiologist assistant Kristi Kerrigan, B.S.R.S., R.R.A., R.T.(R)(CV)(CT), presents an overview of radiation protection in fluoroscopy, including radiation measurements, the biological effects of radiation, the fundamental principles of radiation protection, the ethical and legal responsibilities of medical imaging professionals, examination room design, fluoroscopy equipment safety features, and the protection of patients, personnel and special populations.
