Fluoroscopy procedures can expose patients and personnel to high levels of radiation, an area of public and regulatory concern. Radiologic technologists, radiologist assistants and other professionals operating fluoroscopic units or assisting in fluoroscopy procedures are legally and ethically responsible for operating equipment safely and taking proper radiation protection measures. One way of fulfilling this responsibility is to understand the federal and state regulations regarding fluoroscopy and to follow practices that reduce radiation exposure during medical imaging procedures.
In addition to describing various international groups and federal agencies that have a hand in developing radiation protection standards, Marlene Johnson, M.Ed., R.T.(R), unravels the federal laws and regulations governing fluoroscopy and radiation protection.
